I know this has been brought up before but most of the posts I see are not from people who have tried it. I have been drinking 1 cup of spearmint tea every evening for several months and the results are incredible.
I have not had a single zit which confirms that my acne is hormonal. I have tried researching this further but there is very limited information and most of it has to do with treating Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which I do not have.
In my understanding it reduces androgens circulating in the blood and probably is not helpful to men. I have read that some people had menstrual cycle disturbances, so if you experienced this, please let us know. I have not had any problems so far.
What Causes Hormonal Acne?
Hormonal acne is caused by hormones! Specifically, a type of hormone in your body called androgens.
These are known as male sex hormones, even though they’re present in both sexes, but they’re present in higher amounts in males and cause things like body hair, muscle growth, voice deepening, sperm development and male pattern baldness. The most well-known androgen is testosterone.
Androgens also cause increased sebum production. Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands are located in hair follicles, and more sebum leads to a higher chance of blockages, which lead to breakouts.
Since androgen levels cycle with the menstrual cycle, many women find that they’ll experience hormonal acne at the same stage of their cycle (usually around menstruation, or as I like to call it, “blood flood”).
That conversation from Reddit get a lot of responses with similar results which one user said:
Hello, fellow woman (I got PCOS in fact) that has been drinking 2 cups of Spearmint everyday for 6+ months.
No more hormonal acne for me. =) It did take like 3 months for any significant improvement though and 6 for all my cysts to fuck off. That includes a cyst that had been plaguing me for a year.
Another user also commented:
I’ve been using spearmint tea (Traditional Medicinals brand) for several months and I have stopped experiencing the hormonal breakouts I used to get on my chin and I’m inclined to believe that the spearmint tea is effective for me.
The severity of these breakouts varied fairly significantly, but they always left marks behind, many of which wouldn’t fade for at least several months, usually longer.
I was advised to try spearmint tea by a Curology provider (I do not use their prescription lotion). I was advised to try two cups per day, but I generally stick with one cup per day.
